HOW TO SUBMIT A NOMINEE
To nominate a Teacher, the Post shall complete the following steps and forward this information to your District Teachers Award Chairman. Each Post may submit no more than three (3) Post winners; one for each grade level.
1.Original VFW Teacher Nomination form and an essay of not more than 350 words, signed by the person nominating the teacher.
2.Official Post Teachers entry form with signatures at Post and District levels.
3.Submit a one-page resume. No more than two sides.
4.Submit up to five (5) pages of additional information such as news articles and
supervisor’s recommendations.
5.Include a good quality head and shoulders photograph. Will accept .pdf file if good quality.
The District Chairman shall select a District winner for each grade level and complete the District Report Form and District Participation Summary Report and forward to the Department Chairman along with the documents described in Items #1 - #5 above.
JUDGING. A panel of at least three to five competent and unbiased judges shall be selected. The Department Chairperson should be present at the judging to provide assistance but should not be one of the judges. Prior to judging, the chairperson should review all nomination forms to ensure they adhere to the rules. Make sure the entry is not a self-nomination. The nominator should keep to the 350-word limit and sign the nomination.
Judges should grant points based on four criteria with the potential of 100 points as follows:
•1 – 25 points – Does the teacher teach and/or model good citizenship and community involvement?
•1 – 25 points – An innovative approach to teaching citizenship.
•1 – 25 points – Development of resources to teach citizenship education.
•1 – 25 points – Passion for teaching citizenship education.
District Chairpersons are REQUIRED to attach with their winning submission the district report which is on page three of this program guide. If a district does not provide that report to the Department Chairman, their entry will not be considered.
COMMON ERRORS
1.The same person MUST SIGN AND DATE BOTH the "NATIONAL VFW NOMINEE FORM” in the "Person submitting entry” block AND the "teacher nomination letter".
2.ALL letters of recommendation are signed and dated by the people making them.
3.That you meet the teacher photograph requirements. A teacher class room photo with students is NOT acceptable.
4.Review the five (5) requirements set forth under: "How to submit a nominee”, place all
documents in order (1 thru 5). Re-review for completeness.
5.District Chairs in the past have not submitted their report on which posts participated in the program. District Chairs MUST provide that report with their winning submission to the Department Chair.
DEPARTMENT AWARDS. Posts are hereby notified that for the purposes of All-American recognition, this is a program that MUST BE WORKED. The following are awards:
▪Category K-5 - $500 to teacher + plaque
▪Category 6-8 - $500 to teacher + plaque
▪Category 9-12 - $500 to teacher + plaque
DEPARTMENT DEADLINES FOR 2020-2021:
Entry Deadline to the Post: October 31, 2022 Post Deadline to submit to District: November 15, 2022
District Deadline to submit to Department: December 6, 2022
All-State Recognition. The Teacher Program is a MANDATORY requirement for All-State recognition. If a post is unable to work a Teacher Program, for purposes of All-State, they may donate $150 to the Department HQ. The donation form is attached. You can put the term "teacher” under the other donations line.
